Laptop Hinge Problem

The hinge on my MSI laptop has virtually seized up and is starting to pull the screen apart on one side every time I try to close it. Also causes the screen to flicker on/off whenever it gets moved. I tried a couple drops of 3 in 1 oil to see if that would help but didn't seem to.

Can hinges be fixed or do I need to leave it open for the rest of it's life? Any tips???

  • They do sell hinge mechanism parts for laptops, but you'll need to check our particular model to determine availability.
  • It can be fixed, but depending on the type of hinge it could be an easy repair or an involved one. Some are simply screwed into the chassis, others are part of the chassis. As Bill said, take it in to a knowledgeable shop. Unless you have knowledge of taking apart and reassembling laptops this is not a user-fixable item.
  • I'd take it down to your little local mom & pop computer shop that looks like it's been in business for years. They can quickly look at it and most likely give you a very cheap repair. The keyboard of the laptop I'm typing on went bad. For $53, to include labor, they put a new keyboard on and I was out of the shop in 30 minutes. Don't go to the big box store for it.
