I put a 1 Tb SSD in my laptop prior to going to Win 10. Amazing speed difference for everything. Haven't done a major update on it, although maybe I have because Win10 is always updating in the background and who knows what it's doing to the OS under the hood. Never had long updates.
With the SSD it boots in literally 5 - 7 seconds.
