Imagine still being in a world of DOS 3.1
MS wants to get all it's various platforms using one operating system. There are bound to be growing pains.
They've been doing that since day one with every single OS they've ever made. A typical business might invest millions into developing specialized software for their business. It can take several years to develop and get it fully integrated into their business. Once done, MS drops support for the technology used making the application unable to work on the next OS. So the company starts all over, spending millions more to gain nothing other than money for MS. This isn't so with OS's like Unix/Linux. It takes little effort to modify code written decades ago and recompile for a new, modern PC.
I guess what I'm saying is that for most companies, stability, reliability and compatibility are more important than gaining a little bling at the cost of a complete rewrite every 5-7 years or so.
