Leaving browsers open

My DH has the habit of leaving browser windows open such as WalMart, etc (nothing financial, etc) when he gets thru with the computer. I feel unsafe doing this. Is it better to close them as I feel or is it not a problem?

  • In general, there is no issue with leaving a browser open. However, if using a number of browser extensions or plugins, these can cause memory leaks which use up your resources until you close the browser. These leaks are invariably caused by programming issues.

I've had situations where Firefox was using around 400MB of memory, then come back hours later to discover it utilizing over 1GB of memory.

Mozilla has taken steps with extensions or plugins to reduce this issue, but still exists. And not limited to Firefox by any means.

My laptop hasn't logged off of this forum in many months. I'm not even home and my laptop at home has RV.net on the screen. Hasn't been a problem yet.

Having a quality anti-virus program such as NAV is a must.

I think the O/P is refering to leaving the page open...

The danger depends on the page.> Wal*Mart, not much... Hot, Hot, Hot, XXX, Big danger. (The greatest being DIVORCE)
  • I'm with you- my theory being that I don't want the cookies cluttering things up any longer than necessary.

And here's an observation, for what it's worth: I used to "stay signed in" at a couple of V-bulletin forums, but stopped doing so about a month ago (no particular reason).

To my surprise, my Spam folder immediately stopped filling up! Could be a coincidence, but still...
  • If the PC/Tablet/? is in your RV/Home or otherwise totally in your control, then there should not be a security issue. It is always best to close a browser and/or any other application you are no longer using. If you do use banking application or anything that uses a userid/password then log off the application/site and close the browser when done.

But it doesn't sound like there is a issue.
  • You should only have one browser open. Then open other websites in a new tab. When you close your browser all the tab close. But, the websites you've visited can be seen by looking at your history. No passwords will be saved in your history. Password required websites will open, but at the password required screen. You can also clear your history but NCIS could easily track your browsing habits.
