LED TV to WinXP tower via HDMI

i'm an amateur radio operator with a question about connecting a WinXP PC to an LED TV via HDMI.

I currently have an older WinXP desktop running two processes...an APRS digipeater on one half of the screen and the WeatherUnderground.com chicago weather radar on the other half of the sceen. i'm adding a 26" LED TV that will do double-duty as a TV as well as the monitor for this desktop. the PC tower will be as much as 20-feet away from the TV/monitor. while there still are TV's with a VGA connector I'd rather connect the TV/monitor to the tower via HDMI cable.

I think I have three options.

- get a new pc with built-in HDMI (don't want to spend the bucks).

- an HDMI PCI card for the pc.

- a VGA/HDMI adapter. the HDMI cable runs from the TV to the adapter which either directly plugs into the PC's VGA port or connects via a short VGA cable. I'm liking this option best as I could use it on the tower or my laptop.

questions: do I have a 4th option, something I have not considered? is anyone doing the same sort of thing and how did you make the connection? can you point me to a specific product?

thanks.

I'm not aware of an adapter that converts analog VGA to digital HDMI, if they do exist, they're probably more expensive than your option of adding a PCI card to the pc with HDMI output, might be VGA and DVI, and it comes with a little adapter that converts the DVI connector to an HDMI connector. you can get a cheap AMD based pci video card with hdmi output, easily under $50.

a lot of lcd TVs (my vizio LED 26" for example) has a VGA port on it, so if you have an extra vga port, no need to convert

your 4th option: you can get a USB to HDMI adapter, so you don't have to open up the PC.

I've found several videos on YouTube that demonstrate a converter that appears to do just what I want it to do. but you're right...they run around $80 +/-. i'm thinking that I like this option better than a card as it's not OS specific, doesn't need a driver and since there's no card I can use it on any PC.

of those that I've seen this morning this one is the one I am considering.
  • How about a Google Chromecast? $30

I can mirror anything from my Win 7 PC to my HDMI equipped LCD.

It does require a WiFI network however.
  • XP will be fine ... just need to be careful on the Internet, stay away from things that are "free" and read the fine print on new programs that you install. A lot of "free" programs trick you into installing garbage toolbars and other sillyness that open the flood gates for viruses and malware.

TOM M - I guess without the updates and fixes you will be really open to more and more virus's and the such...

My two DELL M90 XP machines do all I need to do for my Ham Radio operations and I am too old to be taught more tricks with a newer OS setup... Can't afford them either....

Will see how things go I reckon...

  • XP is not going to roll over and die just because Microsoft is going to stop furnishing updates. There are people still using DOS. There is a DOS machine still chugging away where I used to work.

Rich - I have a similar problem where I ran out of HDMI ports. My DELL M90 running XP-PRO is hooked up to a DELL DOCKING STATION and driving dual 24 - inch monitors.

I have RTTY controller input and a couple other emergency things on-ging on with my SETUP.

I was wanting to show my laptop screen up on my 26-inch TV at time. My VIZIO has the HDMI port but I run out of HDMI ports on my laptop/docking station.

I always wanted to downstream some TV SHOWS I have missed because of being on radio nets and can do this just perfect on M90 laptop using WATCH RV SERIES program. I was wanting to throw this up on my bigger screen as well using the HDMI ports

I'm hoping I can get a HDMI extender box at WALMART maybe...

I use this same setup here at the house in my trailer as well. The beauty of the docking station is I can pull the M90 laptop out at the house and snap it into the docking station in the trailer which is setup the same way (Dual monitors and all).

This way I carry the same LAPTOP everywhere we go... The only difference is the RV is slower because of the VERIZON MIFI Internet connection. I also have run into a couple of emails cannot be sent unless I log into the EMAIL Provider and send them from there. I receive all of my emails from the various email providers I have with no problems.

    Works out pretty good me...

Now my next question - what are we going to do in a couple of months when MS stops updating our XP-PRO OS. I'm too broke to update operating systems. In my case that will cost about $120 per computer here to just go with Windows 7. Then some of my XP only programs probably won't work anymore...

In the old days you could load your OS on any number of computers but not now hehe...

Hoping someone will still keep our XP-PRO OS systems still going.

  • They do make VGA to HDMI converters, but would be going from an analog source(VGA) to digital(HDMI).

You can get a fairly inexpensive graphics card w/HDMI output, though likely not as sharp a mirrored computer image going to an HDTV LCD vs a computer monitor. These are really meant to output movies/games/graphics. Still better than converting the signal from VGA to HDMI.
