Any Google document(s) can be flagged to be synced to all the user's devices meaning there are multiple copies on my devices. I have few documents that warrant that kind of backup, but I do use it for things that I want to have access to with no Internet access. When there is Internet access, things are re-synced automatically so any changes I make when offline are saved.
I am not sure why Google is singled out, Microsoft is fast moving to the same model as are many others. The bigger the company, the bigger is their motivation to not sully their reputation with failures to protect user data.
