This too is not what you are asking about but gets me on the internet when we are OFF-GRID camping. I too had pretty good luck with the older VERIZON MIFI 2200 unit. I sit mine in a WILSON CRADLE in my OFF-ROAD POPUP and the CRADLE has an external Antenna connection. My setup is only for 2G and 3G modes. This is a 3GB service plan add-on to my Verizon Cell Phone ACCt for around $35 and creates a local SECURED with PASSWORD WIFI HOTSPOT zone a couple of hundred of feet around my POPUP trailer. Don't have to mess with the McDonalds or loaded down WIFI signals from the camp grounds anymore.
This allows me to use up to five devices on the internet using VERIZON connections etc...

Of course this only works where you can pick up VERIZON which is just about everywhere. My Verizon Cell phone does the same time except my cell phone is older and does not broadcast WIFI hotspot zones...
This setup is not very robust and only has a slow speed connection. I only use it for checking into the internet for paying some bills, keeping in contact with the kids on social media, and some limited surfing of the internet. This setup is not robust enough to do any major downstreaming of Movies etc... A typical downstream movie will use 1GB of data for a three hour movie...
VERIZON does however have other MIFI units that will do some of this for you but it cost alot more...
I just recently changed the MIFI 2200 for the MIFI 6620L JETPACK for a 5GB Data plan with Verizon. This costs $50 a month with Verizon. Works great here around the house but since I am temporarily shut down camping with my OFF-ROAD Camper haven't got play with it yet doing any off-road camping. I know I will need to update my WILSON CRADLE now as well...
