We have a Toshiba HD DVD recorder that lets us record onto re-writable DVDs. If I use RAM DVDs I can use the pause button while recording. It works just like a Tivo.
This is an older model that will not pickup digital signals. We use it with basic cable, no box.
Ths one receives OTA digital signals
Walmart version
I had the Magnavox DVR for several years and it was perfect until Charter cable encrypted their signal and the DVR became useless. I now rent Charter's DVR and my cost went up 40%. I hate Charter.
I think their time as a cable TV company is limited. Right now I can wire my laptop to the TV and see everything I watch. The drawback is that wiring it up is inconvenient and sloppy. As soon as a reliable wireless connection from the laptop to the TV is available I will quit Charter.
There are some boxes available now that claim to do that but reviews are mixed and they are expensive. Chromecast would be a great solution if more sources were supported and it weren't limited to the Chrome browser.
