I use my browser toolbar for my shortcuts only because I always have a browser open. My DW on the other hand does not and likes them on her desktop so it is a one-click operation to get where she wants to be and she doesn't have to click on the browser then on the shortcut. It has little to do with understanding how a computer works but everything to do with what works for you.
