In theory, the data is there but the date on old threads isn't exactly highlighted and having to check the user's history isn't convienent. It would have been nice, if when they trashed the old site, if they would have updated it to highlight if a thread is old. This issue comes up at least a couple times a month, so it's obviously a system not a user issue.
There have been several requests to lock down comments on threads older than a year. The requests have been received and acknowledged but still no changes. I'd say it happens a couple times a week. And it's almost always newbies who come here from a google search, never complete their profiles ("visitor") and never return. The other problem is, that the date on the topic changes to the last comment date, not the original date. So when a visitor comes here, posts on a 10 year old thread, it updates the date to today, instead of 10 years ago. You can't see the actual date until you go into the topic. I've never seen another forum software do this.
Locking down old topics is not hard. Last week there was a an old topic that turned sour and the comments were turned off. So it can be done.

it is harder than we think apparently, we have to get the software developers to add that to the package. this is the problem with using a 3rd party controlled forum software instead of the normal off the shelf and you pick the option version.

Updating the thread date has thrown me off several times. I click on the thread because it shows a date that's less than 3 days old and only after the snarky "it's a 10yr old thread" do I catch it.
