Updating the thread date has thrown me off several times. I click on the thread because it shows a date that's less than 3 days old and only after the snarky "it's a 10yr old thread" do I catch it.
yup I get sucked in every time way2roll tells someone its a old thread haha..

I think the old users are gone for good, after the many changes that never bring it back to a standard format layout and options. After a couple years of this, I fear it is over. Social Media is more popular but can never be as great as a forum for asking questions and having good answers that can be looked up time and time again to help folks.

so it isn't as easy as we would think, and I can explain why. we have this issue with software we use at work also.
this forum software is more than that, yes the fourm is part of the suite but it is a large package that can do everythign I would expect from e-commerce to customer service and so on. And as such it is a service offered by a company. so they maintain the software and you (goodsam) pays a user fee. so Goodsam isn't the only user of the software there are probably tones of companies using it.. might not all be using the forum feature but that's part of the package. so we use this kind of system for out drilling software at the mine I work at. there are several different mining companies using the same software and when we want or need a change we have to submit a ticket and when the owner group of the software gets it they look at all their users and try to determine how that change will impact the other places and if there is no impact , or minimal they write the change into the next software revision. sometimes we get notices saying another user has requested the following changes and we are given time to input if that will affect how we do things and weather we are opposed to the changes or not. so generally one of these companies is not going to change things if it only benefits one user but could negatively effect another.
I suspect there is another issue at play and it is how the companies want to use the old posts. they are a resource and when a new person finds then on google if every time he try's to ask for help it is locked out then people will become frustrated and stop trying.. with them asking questions on 10 year old posts it is driving up the volume of traffic and that's the main goal of any forum board.
so in my opinion what we need to do is get the old users back and active and that should go a long ways in helping.

No worries man. Agreed, seems like such a simple and obvious fix. And we, the actual users, have been asking for this for a while now.

Sorry, wasn't trying to pick on you, just annoyed that a fairly basic feature isn't accounted for.

no that's fine, I just have to learn to look myself when a post shows up in my notifications haha

I'm really trying to be helpful and continue to draw awareness to the problem. But I'll stop. It doesn't seem to help anyway.
