I am another "satified" Delorme customer and I agree with Matt that the UI is needlessly difficult but the program(s) offer an amazing amount of power.
I too had this conversation with Delorme several months ago, in the context of Xmap ($249). There hasn't been an upgrade in years and the last upgrade offered only minor changes.
Garmin seems very interested in what to keep and what to let go. FWIW, my impression is that the consumer packages (SA and Topo) have a bright future, but that the semi-professional Xmap is struggling to find the proper niche. Nothing they said, but they seemed pleasantly surprised when I pointed out how useful Xmap can be for the enthusiast market.
For someone who has the attention span, Xmap offers the ability to layer in satellite-quality aerial photos without limit. I have several terabytes of aerial photos on my HDD that I paid a grand total of $29 for, and which I am entitled to keep foreever, along with the software.
The OP asked for a solution that he could use without internet access, and most people brushed that point aside. But Xmap is the perfect solution for someone who wants to do exactly that, such as me.
