Mapping/Planning software

I have just finished rebuilding my computer to Win 7 after a disastrous upgrade to Win 10.

I have been using Garmin Mapsource to plan trips but the install is a pain and requires that I hook up my outdated Garmin GPS which I never use. So it is time to get another mapping program.

When the Internet is available Google Maps might work but I want something I can use without access to the Internet.

So, what do you all recommend?
  • I use Mapsource also and feel your pain. Garmin is pushing "Base Camp" but I don't like it. It's a free download if you want to try it. I've been using Google Maps, and then using Earth to grab the coordinates and plug them into my GPS. If you have the luxury of planning ahead, that method will take you to within 10' of your destination. It's a little time consuming but worth it for me.
  • Its not which is best anymore, Its only what you can get. DeLorme has been sold, so I don't know the status of Street Atlas or whether it will be continued. I understand but have not tried, that Google maps will down sections that you need.
