I primarily use VLC Player. It comes with its own codecs so will playback almost any media format. We even use VLC at some well known DC museums I work with, as its highly configurable at can play back video files full screen with no on-screen display. It can also be set to pause on the last frame, so no chance of seeing the PC/Mac desktop if used for a public screening.
I also personally use the KMPlayer which also installs its own codecs. It actually works better in some instances, such as with a looped A-B playback region. Whereas VLC can fail to do so with some interframe(mp4) file formats. Just be aware, KMPlayer will install third party adaware unless careful.
