A lot of pilots use them for backup to a planes navigation systems and rated them real good for all 3 axis. I found more then one apps that you can download all streets and highway data for the whole USA into your device so you don't need cell coverage.
After lurking around a bunch, I found out if you buy an Ipad with just WIFI you have to go this route to use GPS when you have no WIFI coverage. Not to mention WIFI isn't near as accurate for GPS. The Ipads with onboard cell included GPS chip built in . The nice part of Samsung was they put the GPS chip technology in both type of units cell and WIFI at least they did. I went with Samsung just for that reason and didn't need this. Just didn't want another cell bill each month.

I have one of those, never had a problem. We have two iPads and one iPod, WiFi only so we saved a bit of money. We took it with us to Europe, downloaded local maps all for free. iPad in the car iPod in my shirt pocket, never got lost.
