Millenicom Alternative?

Millenicom worked well for the six months I enjoyed it! I'm looking for something inexpensive and month to month that I can use when traveling. Doesn't need to be a lot of gigs; simply something that would give me access when needed. All comments appreciated.

Most people assumed that with Verizon acquiring Millenicom that this alternative would disappear. Not the case at all as you can still sign up for Verizon network access at $90 a month for 20GB of data and no contract is needed as when going directly to Verizon.

Millenicom is still very much alive and well and the best data access service you can buy in the United States.

I don't know where you got your information but it's incorrect. Verizon did not acquire Millenicom. Verizon refused to negotiate a new contract with Millenicom and in effect put them out of business. Millenicom had to lay off all of it's employees with no notice of termination, and minimum severance pay.
As to being able to still signup for Millenicom service at $89.99, I suggest you go to the Millenicom website and try. When you try to buy a plan you will find it says "NO PLANS AVAILABLE".

I think the confusion is a result of former millenicom customers being offered similar VZW plans.

When I first signed up with Millenicom it was $69.99/Month for 20GB. Then it went to $89.99/Month for 20GB. No taxes nor fees. I contacted Verizon on the number set up for former Millenicom customers after Millenicom went belly up. Their offer was $99.99/Month PLUS fees and taxes for 20GB. I passed since even when I had Millenicom the closest I ever got to the 20GB cap was 16GB. It was generally 10GB or less a month. I have switched to Straight Talk (3G only) and just buy the 5GB data plan when needed.
  • As of 12/12 the Millenicom website was still active and advertising the 20GB for $90 plan. From the new website the people behind Millenicom are moving into a new type of data service that they are calling "HiFi".

We use Verizon for our cell phones but not for data as the costs are too high for our business use. For intermittent use while traveling in the USA, Verizon does provide a prepaid plan for the Mifi that costs $60 for 3GB but has no activation fee, and it expires after 30 days and you lose whatever data has not been used. As always in this country we pay a lot more to get a lot less or SNAFU.

I just went to the site and when I tried the sign up button for the 20GB $90 plan I get a 404 error..."Not Found

The requested URL /members/signup.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request." I have no idea what they are talking about a HiFi system.

You can put the Verizon device on vacation up to 2x a year and suspend billing. Check on www.verizonwireless.com
Verizon also has a pay as you go plan.

While you can go on "vacation" twice a year, the plan that Verizon set up for former Millenicom subscribers is not a flexible as Millenicom's was. The maximum vacation suspension allowed by Verizon is 3 months, twice a year. If you want to use the service for less than 6 months per year, you will be paying for service you don't use. If you don't restart the service before the vacation suspension runs out, the plan will be dropped & you will have to start a standard Verizon data plan.

Millenicom had a 2 month free vacation suspension, and allowed you to drop the service for as long as you wished, then restart for around $20.00.
  • We had been using Millenicom but in the future the best deal for use, or the least bad anyway, is the $60 for 3GB for 30 days prepaid plan with Verizon. There is no setup charge or disconnect fee and our trips inside the USA are less than 30 days in duration.

We already own a couple of the Novatel Mifi devices so our only expense is the $60 per trip for secure data access using Verizon. We only use the data connection for our business email so 3GB is enough for our trips. The expense is cheap insurance to keep our data and our laptops secure.
