Here's what we did - took about a half hour at the Verizon store up the road.
We have two "basic" phones with Verizon, and have been paying about $80 a month. We explained the situation, what we wanted, and asked how we could get there. Wound up converting our existing phone service to a "shared anytime" plan, then adding a hotspot with 30gb a month data. The data costs $130 a month. The three phone lines (2 phone, 1 hotspot) cost $20 each. That's $190 a month, or about $20 more than what we had when Millenicom was in the mix, for half again as much data. We also bought (another $50) one of the Verizon 4G/LTE hotspots. It helped that the per-line charges had just been reduced from $30 a day or two ago.
Where we are now (Charleston SC) the LTE speed is nothing short of phenomenal. Speedtest.net this morning shows 19.26mbps download, 12.07mbps upload - about double what we got with the 4G. It was half again higher speed last night.
Your mileage may vary. But we're not unhappy.
I would suggest that it helps to deal with a Verizon company store rather than an "authorized" dealer. They almost always seem better able to make things happen
