MODEM / ROUTER Question

Next week, Xfinity will be replacing my older Comcast / Xfinity modem / router with a new unit.. It was requiring a reset almost every week. When they do this, can or will they transfer the WiFi security code from the old modem to the new one OR will I have to enter a new code on all my WiFi devices like cell phone, Samsung Pad, laptops, tv's, printers, etc.. Had to ask..

If it's a new unit, highly likely it will require each device to be reconnected.
Not really, if the password is the same, the devices won't care about the machinery, just the connection. All of the devices, phones, tablets, and laptops all connected with no issues.
just password or name and password?
I think both need be the same as the old.

I just went through this. Unfortunately my new modem/router (Surfboard SBG8300) would not allow an SSID of less than 6 characters and my old one was 5 !

Do you know how many devices 6 grandchildren and their parents have !!!

That sounds like a reason to choose a different new router!
  • When I replaced my single point router recently with a mesh router (amazing improvement, 3 nodes scattered throughout the house), I gave it the same SSID and encryption password as the old one. Everything connected automagically.

    Can: yes
    Will: ??????
    however you can do it

To do so you need to log in as adminstrator to the Router
NOTE yoru current SSID and PSK
    Make the changes
Save and in some cases restart (other you don't need to restart)

As an example My Spectrum router came with Spectrum122342r or ome such.. It's now SpectrumYXM and the PSK is.. Well ********** Same as the phone which is SamsungGalaxyYXM

(Get the feeling that the suffex of my ham call is "YXM")

makes it easy to pick my router out of 20 other Spectrum routers or Samsung Galaxy phones.
Oh the other router in the house (needed for some hardware that does not like the Spectrum) is Snafu.net... if you don't know what it means "Situtation Normal, All ****** UP.
  • Someone (installation tech or yourself)
Can manually set the password (SSID) to whatever you want.
In this case use can simply program the new modem with the same password(log in data) as the old modem.
  • If it's a new unit, highly likely it will require each device to be reconnected.
  • You should be able to use the old security code on the router/modem. I replaced our old router and simply used the old password in place of the default. No biggie. Of course everyone hates me because I use a 20 character password with letters, numbers, Caps, and special characters. :) So I didn't want them all PO'd because they had to redo their network access.
