On Win 7 you will not be able to run an XP version of Quickbooks Pro unless you have a Win 7 version (ultimate, enterprise or professional versions) with XP Mode. My wife has Win 7 Ultimate and was able to run her old version of Quickbooks Pro only on the XP mode side of the OS. It would not run on the Win 7 side. This turned out to be somewhat inconvenient and since she uses QB pro for business wound up buying a newer edition of the software that would run on Win 7.
Win 8 no longer has XP mode and will not run QB Pro's older editions. You may still be able to install a Virtual Machine on Win 8 (???) and with XP disks install XP on the virtual machine and run all XP software.
I had no problem with Photoshop on Win 7 and was able to install an older MS office that MS says will not run on Win 7 BUT ran just fine.
