Hey Franchesca, I have been in the basic two wire industry since 1954 and spent a few years in a tech lab, I have two Fluke meters that I bought before I retired back in 1995. The only problem I have with them is that I forget to turn them off and the 9v battery dies. I had a Fluke 8050 way back when due to needing direct read db, it is the only one that has needed a display replacement. They are great and long lasting. I too have several of the freeby HF meters and don't consider them an insult but for real work I use the Flukes, in possible drop situations, I always try to use the cheapies. I don't like Fluke's leads and always buy other brands if I damage the piercing points.
I also do a lot of woodworking and have some very late c1800 tools that I love and use. They were Grand Dads and Great Grand Dads. I have some HF squares and gauges but I love my old stuff and my Bridge City measuring tools. When I'm building furniture, I use the BC tools and my old tools, when I'm building a box to hold parts, I use the HF. IMHO, Bridge City is the best available today.
Hope you get my drift, the best is always cherished and when you need the best, it is always nice to have. Buy him a great meter and maybe slip a HF in his RV toolbox for kicks.
