Just reading the subject line reminded me of the IBM/Levno commercials at about the time IBM Thinkpads became Levno Thinkpads.
Seems they put an acceleration sensor in it and if it sensed free fall it very swiftly PARKED the hard drive.. A HD parked can take a fairly serious "Hit" without damage. So the fact your Tosh was off and the HD "Parked" is why it survived... Just so you know.
