The OP listed his requirements. Basically he wants a new machine that will run what he is using on his old machine that is running XP.
Any new laptop wint any Intel i series processor with Win8 will easily give much more performance that his current machine.
I just bought a Lenovo Z500 with Intel i5, 6Gb memory, 1 Tb drive DVD USB 3.0 and 2.0 HDMI for 549 in Canada.
It runs all the programs I used on the previous Win7 machine including MS Office.
I installed a front end from Stardock Software so the machine looks like a Win7 machine. I know several other people using this front end with complete success.
This seems to be a much simpler way to meet the OP's needs than messing about with dual boots and external drives and so on.
