Need wifi.

McDonald's, Starbucks or your own phone hotspot. Forget satellite...it's slow.

Seems that lots of folks are finding out that "Free" wifi really isn't. Nor is it everywhere.

Verizon MIFI dataplans. I have an older grandfathered 3GB dataplan for $27 a month and this allows 5 WIFI device connections anywhere you pick up Verizon Cellphone service... Today VERIZON smallest GB dataplan is 5GBs for around $60 a month.

We only use this for checking emails, paying bills, keeping in touch with the kids and very little surfing of the internet...

Verizon has a larger dataplan called JETPACK. Millenicom was the best 20GB dataplan to use but they no longer exist now I guess...

You will need at least something in the 20GB range if you plan on downstreaming any TV channels or movies... You will use a couple of GBs per movie doing this...

An answer for you depends on both how much you travel and how much you use the Internet. If you are a full timer, then I suspect the best route is to buy a data plan from one of the major providers....ATT ormVerizon....and get a phone or device that you can use as your own ' hot spot' with that service. Probably this is going to cost you...depending on your data needs.

In my case, we travel less than half the year and do not need any yearly contract for service. I have an Apple iPad Air tablet which I set up as my local hotspot - thus we use that with our other tablets and computers those few months that we do travel. Verizon provides a range of monthly NO-CONTRACT data plans which I turn on and off as needed from my iPad. Since my data needs are pretty minimal most of the time I select their bottom priced plan of 1GB for $20. per month. It is quite rare for me to stay overnight where I can't find Verizon coverage.

I have a Verizon Jetpack on a prepay plan. This allows me to use it when travelling, and not have to pay anything when we are at home an don't need it. Rates vary, depending on how much data you expect to use. My cell phone can also be used as a hotspot, on another provider. We find that which provider to use depends on your location.

It is amazing how folks say "Wi-Fi" when they mean INTERNET

These are your choices:

1: The kindness of others, that is Park Wi-Fi, McDonalds, Library and ____(long list of places, Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-mart (many) several Supermarkets, HEck one city is doing it city wide.)

2: Cellular internet,, So called Wireless,, AT&T and VERIZON both have nearly identical coverage maps now, I use T-mobile, which shold be able to roam on AT&T but I have yet to convirm,, Avoid Sprint. Major issue: With most providers there are data limits (IE: 10 Gig and you get either cut off of CHA CHINGed) Some however are offering unlimited, at least 3G (slower) speeds.


3: 2-way Sattllite internet: HUGHES net classic (not 4G).
Slow, long lag time (Pings always over 1/2 second) and very limited, though they are way nicer about that..

Verizon has pay as you go plans. Check them out on www.verizonwireless.com or go to a Verizon store.

PS.. Verizon also will allow you to put your device on "vacation" and suspend billing. For details, check their website. FAQ's.

verizon works and so does mcdonalds...just depends on what you want to spend.
