New computer & TV for monitor

I use a 26" vizio TV as my monitor in my den for my dell desktop. When Im not on computer I sit on the couch and watch TV with it..

The one we got has HDMI (thus my getting the HDMI cable) and it also advertises on box to use as a PC monitor. It is a 1080p also.

A new new computer might not even have HDMI, it's fallen out of favor for some reason. You might need a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter also called a dongle.

Get a use monitor from craigslist. You will be happer.

Really depends on the TV.

Some make a pretty good monitor, I'm using a 43" LG 4K TV at my house on my main computer, it's awesome. A neighbor bought a 24" for the same I paid on my 43, and they lost out. The TV for whatever reason stretches the computer image off the edges of the screen, and there's no way to turn it off. They returned it, got another brand same size, works great once set to PC mode and "just scan" for picture size.

Cool thing about TV as a monitor, using HDMI is you get sound too, without having to mess with another cable, or cranking up the laptop speakers.

You will need to set your "input" settings (usually a button on your remote) to HMDI. You may have more than 1 HMDI ports on the back of your television, all of mine have 2 ports. So when selecting the "source" you'll have a drop down list, usually listing CATV, Over the Air TV, HMDI-1, HMDI-2, and possibly some other types of inputs, depending upon what kind of jacks are on the back.

Just an FYI. I have tried use our flat screen, HD televisions as a monitor for our computers, and found the picture to be a bit grainy, especially reading texts. Depending upon the resolution of your television you may just end up getting a computer monitor.

I do a lot of work from home, and have a company laptop. The screen is pretty small. So I got the largest computer flat screen I could find a few years ago and been using it ever since. Worlds apart from the screen appearance on the televisions and the computer monitor.

Just something to think about.

You shouldn't need to set anything much up--just choose the appropriate HDMI input. Without an antenna or cable connection it's rather pointless to scan for channels anyhow. You may wish to fiddle with some of the picture settings, though, to suit your fancy.
