What makes it horrible? I don't understand what an email "client" does, unless you have several email accounts, which I don't understand either.
Slow, every single interaction requires talking to a server and getting a response over a number of hops. dog slow. Also requires connection, I have a lot of information in alert emails that I need access to and may or may not have any net access where I'm located when I need the data (inside secure datacenters for example).
I manage several email accounts across multiple servers, some only my family have, some I use for business, some I use for alerts from IDS/IPS and server monitoring systems.
The number of ways people use email is as varied as the number of people using email. There is no one correct client and configuration that works for everyone.
