How you tried to use the Import function found under Tools in Thunderbird. It will usually without issue, import OE emails.
Also, you could forward those emails to yourself with OE and then receive them with Thunderbird. That will get them to Thunderbird.
Also, as a Thunderbird user DO install MozBackup found here and be sure to occasionally backup your Thunderbird with MozBackup. MozBackup also is great to use with FireFox. Moz, backups not only your email but also the Thunderbird settings, etc..
