No internet on lap top

Rebooted my lap top this morning. Normal screen showed up and asked for my PIN. Entered it and received this message "Your device is off line. Please sign in with last password used on this device." When I usually enter the PIN it opens my screen and internet is on.

Bottom right hand corner is an icon with a red X on it. If I click on it it brings up a picture with the airplane and has airplane mode. I am aware that airplane mode shuts off the internet but there is not the usual internet symbol to click on. Connected cable directly from router to lap top. Plug on router blinks indicating a signal but where connected to lap top light is solid white and no blinking..

Screen shows time and date and profile picture. It also has what looks like a clock but when I click on it opens "ease of use" There is also a "power" button that opens and asks whether I want SLEEP, SHUTDOWN or RESTART.
When I click on that the blue screen reappears and asks for password. The "white" dod on the wifi key is on. Without being able to sign in on this page the computer will not allow me to do anything further.
Any ideas?

I keep all passwords on a sheet of paper and update when one changes. Went to my camper and found an old password sheet with a different password for signing on. Used it and was able to sign on. Somehow the sign on password got changed. I am now able to access everything on computer except wifi. The wifi symbol that has been on bottom right is no longer there. When I open a browser it tells me there is no inhternet connection.
I went to the settings MrWizard suggested and turn off and back on. Still no internet. When I went to settings I clicked on "network and Internet" and ran the trouble shooter. It says it could not identify problem. I have gone to network and reset it. It is supposed to remove and reinstall network adapters and set other networking components back to their original settings. It rebooted but still no icon for wifi.
I opened network properties and it shows my wifi adapter status as operational but "connectivity (IPv4/ipv6) disconneced". I went back and opened airplane mode and it shows "on" but it is dark and will not open if I click on it.
I have tried to set up a new network but it will not populate. It should ask me to choose a wireless router or access point.

I have a Linksys router that my android phones are conected to. Also have an acess router connected to it for video for my security cameras and they are working.

you need to boot the laptop in safe mode, then do a restore from a previous date
this will fix it unless there is a hard ware problem
once running do a malware and virus scan

usually malware allows you to log on then locks out some files or functions
but allows for internet, they need it to scam you for money

He said he got far enough to login, but then he had no internet connection.
If he could post up the original problem, then they can scam him on whatever he used there. As you pointed out.
  • The existence of the thing that looks like a clock tells me you are running either Win10 or some kind of server. seeing as it's a laptop I'm betting on Win 10. While I have very little experience with Win10, Windows works kind of the same on all operating systems so here's some things I would try.

If it's asking for a PIN, is it a corporate laptop? If so the help desk is probably familiar with this situation and can help.

Does it let you in if you plug it into the network and reboot with it plugged in?

Did you forget the last login password? Or do you know the last password but are hesitant to use it because you are concerned there might be a virus?

If you know the password have you tried using it to see if you can get in?

Try shutting it off and pulling the laptop battery out for a minute then try restarting while on the network.

The manufactures website might have a fix for it if you click on the "support" link that is usually at the top of the home screen.

As said above boot into safe mode and find the system restore and restore to the last day before you rebooted. You might need google to help with safe mode and system restore as each manufacturer does it differently.

I read again. Are you saying it asks for the password and when you enter that password it then says device offline? If so what happens after that message? Does it return to the sign in screen or does it let you in?

  • How did you post this question?

What kind of laptop, make/model, and what Operating System and software level is it, Windows10/Apple??/Linux???

If it's Win10, is there more than one logon id set up on the Windows login page, like Admin or Administrator? In addition to your name? Can you log in as someone else, and see if you can get started up. If yes, then you may be able to open the Network Troubleshooter, and see what it thinks about the problem.

Could it be a virus or some other malware posing as the Windows Startup screen, trying to get control of your machine? Have you noticed any other odd behavior prior to this issue?
  • 1st question - How are you able get onto RV.Net without the internet??
2nd question - What actually happens when you try and sign onto the laptop with your last know password intstead of your pin nr???
  • Wizard-that won't work. I can not get past my login screen.
    drsteve-no switch on keyboard
In the past-there would be an icon bottom right cornerindicating wifi- Clicking on it would bring me to available connections that I could sign in on and also an airplane mode selection but it is no longer there.
The sign in screen has my name and a block to enter passsword. When I enter it it gives me the "device is off line" but I should be able to log on without the internet. The wifi icon is on the keyboard and a white light. That should indicate that it is receiving wifi. I have, in the past, been able to toggle off and on. When I would turn it off I would get a little orange light. Now I get nothing.
  • you might try
going to control panel / device manager
    scroll down to network adapters
find your WAN adapters (might be ore than one)
    disable them
    then enable them

sometimes i need to do that with the built in realtech wifi adapter
when the wifi does not want to work
