So why then, if there is strong wifi where someone is at are they still using their mifi?
There are many reasons to use our own internet connection. The first is that you have you own in-house network which allows you to share printers or other NAS devices such as backup storage. The second most common reason to use your own device is that while the campgroud offers wifi, it frequently stinks! Many people also feel that using your own secure cellular device makes banking and other secure transactions safer. There is some slight hint of truth to this but once you have created a secure link to your banking site the security levels are the same.
I am currently in a park in Golden, CO with 2 strong wifi networks available. This park only has about 30 sites but using their wifi, I cannot stay connected for more than 20-30 minutes before it's either overloaded (I am guessing that's why it's too slow) or simply drops out and this is a City run park.
Thanks for the info. I have been trying to understand the benefit of why people purchase mifi.
I'm still using my '6 year old' EVDO USB from Sprint, have never been without a signal in 6 years RV'ing full-time, unlimited data, one monthly fee, warp speed.
So I guess that's why I have a hard time feeling sympathetic to RV'ers that have to jump thru hoops to get 'free' internet, hooking up phones to wires, tethering to this and that, to mifi, etc etc etc., etc. I plug a USB into my laptop and go. I back up to a mass storage unit without any other devices, and the new printers are so small now it sits next to the laptop.
I have connected to WIFI with my computer at a few CG's to see what it was like and personally it sucks. I wouldn't drive one mile RV'ing if I had to rely on free CG internet!
Yeah, basicly I know what my Jetpack can do and I just push the button and it's on and I don't got to fill out any forms and do passwords as you do with WiFi.
