Ok nerds, online backup?

Just got an email from Joe over at Code 42. My long time cloud backup provider is eliminating the "home user" tier. Customers can either move over to a much more expensive enterprise tier or hit the bricks.

I'm looking for a cloud BACKUP (not just plain storage) provider offering either unlimited or 5TB capacity with support for Linux, at under $200/yr.

By backup I mean the service has a client that manages copying the data and tracking changes, and having the ability to restore previous versions of data, not just the most recent.

Suggestions?

  • Why not just stick with Crashplan? you can move to the new Small Business service for $120 a year and retain all current features but computer to computer backups. Still seems reasonable to me.....unless I'm missing something. Personally I only use 200GB on C.P. right now even though I have 30+ TB of Data, the 200GB is the only stuff I truly care about, the rest I won't shed any tears over if I lose it.
  • What are you trying to back up?

5TB is a lot of data. If the bulk is say in movies (files that don't change), would it make more sense to put those on a local portable hard drive and live with a much smaller cloud backup. You could even set them up with an old computer acting as a server with a router so you have access without connecting the portable hard drive to your working computer.
  • gsuites is currently not enforcing it 1tb limit per user. its 120 a year and rclone can be used on linux to backup
  • 5TB for $240...

I remember the first hard drive I bought for the work computer: 5MB and $5000. :)
  • I will assume that the OP has local backup under control. If not, I'd highly recommend getting a either a couple of $100 external hard drives and backing up THERE first. Secondly, under the "there's no such thing as too many backups" theory, I'd spring for a Blueray drive and burn 25 GB or 50 GB Blueray disks.

To answer the question asked, Apple's iCloud is free for 5 Gb, and costs $0.99 per month for 50 GB. The OP does not hint at his devices, but at the same time, I'm not sure iCloud isn't available for anyone. I have Apple devices, so perhaps the price is only for Apple owners, I wouldn't know.

  • I don't know of anything that cheap for that much storage. You can check prices on some services here.

My suggestion is to get yourself about 3 big external hard drives, and rotate your backups, keeping them in separate locations. There is some good software around that will let you semi-automate the process.

Carbonite and Backblaze don't support Linux. Dropbox is looking like the leader right now, at $240 a year
  • Cloud backup for your personal and most sensitive data? Why assume that a total stranger can and will safeguard your data? Even the US Government can't prevent hackers from getting into Confidential databases - many of us have "free" Identity Thief and Credit Monitoring provided by the US Government because the Chinese hacked their database containing our confidential information.

I backup to local disks and/or tapes (on some old systems). For really important stuff I rotate the backup media to an off-site location.
