I watched the race on a FOX channel with no problems. Transmitter was about 90 miles from me.
Your problem was loss of signal. Everything depends on how far you are from the transmitter, weather, RF interference, etc.
Adding a second in-line RF amplifier can help keep a weak signal work on your television. It is usually easier to get a signal at night hours. The sun angle will do in weak signals during daylight hours depending where your signal is coming from.
