Problems with backup camera

We just purchased a 2008 Hurricane with a factory installed back-up camera; the screen comes on when I put the rig in reverse, seems to be trying to show a picture, but stays blank. Have had two sons with electronic skills check what connections we can find to no avail. It is obviously getting power, just no picture. Previous owner deceased and his widow says it worked until the last time they had it out.

Before I start tearing too far into it or taking it to a dealer, does anyone have suggestions about what to look for or to try next.
  • Thanks for replies. Think I have tracked the wiring and will work on the connector between camera and monitor again.

I have a vanguard that was probably installed when the coach was new 20 years ago. Several years ago I started loosing a picture and thought it was the camera so had a new on installed along with a new cable. Everything worked ok for a while then began loosing the picture again. They had installed the cable on the underside of the RV along the frame in the same location as the original . The cable was open to the elements and subject to abrasion from the undercarriage. I pulled the cable and tested it and could not get continuity so purchased a new cable. While I was waiting for UPS to deliver the new cable I decided to see if I could locate the break in the old one. I probably cut that thing in 5 pieces before I could find a section that would test. Then I thought I’d see if I could solder it back together. I did, so I connected to the monitor and the camera and it worked. I decided then that I would run the new cable, when I got it, inside the coach along the wall behind the cabinets. I used the old cable for a trial run, it worked fine and it’s been in there ever since. I still have the new cable which is stored away somewhere. Anyway you might look at the cable for the problem.

  • Our backup camera monitor has two possible camera inputs, but just one camera. Sometimes the button that switches between the two inputs gets bumped and it behaves just like yours. If you have such a switch, try switching it.
