Question about setup for the Dish network "Tailgater"

I was told by Dish that the handle has to point north when placing the tailgater on the ground, is that true? The instructions say nothing about point the box in any direction. It only has to have a clear view of the sky. I want to make a mount to clamp the tailgater to the top of the ladder on my 5th wheel so it's out of the way but if it needs to point a certain direction then I cant mount it. (it will not be permanent)

  • The Dish has to point to the southern sky that's where the Satellites are located, which means that the Handle of the Tailgater will be facing North.
  • the pathfinder x2 does say that but i don't know about the tailgater.
  • I just checked on King Controls web site and they do say it should point north for faster sat locating. The mount I designed will allow me to point the handle in four directions exactly matching the four walls of my camper so with four locations it should be close enough to "north" to satisfy it?
  • After warranty I have pulled the cover off mine a couple times to watch it. When you connect up and select scan, the dish will begin rotating. It will slowly rotate counter clockwise for a part circle, then reverse direction and rotate clockwise the opposite direction until it completes a full circle. Then it will rotate back to a generally southern direction and begin incremental side to side and up down movements as it apparently homes in on the sats.

I have started mine with the handle in any number of directions and it does not seem to matter. Nothing in the Tailgater instructions about handle direction.
  • Handle points north away from southwest (satellite is south of Texas). The dish will not rotate 360*. You do not need a compass just do not point handle south-southwest.
