I have an Escort MAX in my daily driver, which along with Escort Live on my iPhone, provides me darn good, but not perfect protection. It also shows cop spotted reports from WAZE users on the maps.
Unfortunately, during my daily commute here in MASS, driving the speed limit is more dangerous than speeding, as you'll probably be run over from behind! More important than on the highway is the need for a detector on the back-roads portion of my commute, where local yokels set unreasonably low speed limits than wait to generate revenue. I cannot count how many times my detector combo has saved me.
As others have said, if you are hit by laser speed gun while speeding, you are instantly caught, but there are also "jammers" that can work with your detector to give you added protection.
Until you spend every workday in rush hour traffic, please don't suggest how I should drive or whether a detector makes sense for everyone. And no....... I have never even considered needing or wanting it in my coach.
I did spend most every day of my 40 year adult working life in large cities New York City, Baltimore MD, Washington DC and Atlanta GA just for a few. I guess that makes me qualified to make suggestions according to your stated criteria.
As to everyone else exceeding the speed limit and possibly running over those that obey the law. This only supports my statement that you and others are most likely exceeding your perceived driving abilities.
As far as the "local yokels" go. It's their community and their right to set limits as they see fit. You as a visitor to their community should respect their rights to set speed limits even if you disagree with them. Which is not a very good reason to break the law. There are other reasons for setting the lower speed limits other then for the purpose of revenue generation. Protecting their children from being run over by someone going excessively fast comes to mind.
