I did spend most every day of my 40 year adult working life in large cities New York City, Baltimore MD, Washington DC and Atlanta GA just for a few. I guess that makes me qualified to make suggestions according to your stated criteria.
As to everyone else exceeding the speed limit and possibly running over those that obey the law. This only supports my statement that you and others are most likely exceeding your perceived driving abilities.
As far as the "local yokels" go. It's their community and their right to set limits as they see fit. You as a visitor to their community should respect their rights to set speed limits even if you disagree with them. Which is not a very good reason to break the law. There are other reasons for setting the lower speed limits other then for the purpose of revenue generation. Protecting their children from being run over by someone going excessively fast comes to mind.

I have an Escort MAX in my daily driver, which along with Escort Live on my iPhone, provides me darn good, but not perfect protection. It also shows cop spotted reports from WAZE users on the maps.
Unfortunately, during my daily commute here in MASS, driving the speed limit is more dangerous than speeding, as you'll probably be run over from behind! More important than on the highway is the need for a detector on the back-roads portion of my commute, where local yokels set unreasonably low speed limits than wait to generate revenue. I cannot count how many times my detector combo has saved me.
As others have said, if you are hit by laser speed gun while speeding, you are instantly caught, but there are also "jammers" that can work with your detector to give you added protection.
Until you spend every workday in rush hour traffic, please don't suggest how I should drive or whether a detector makes sense for everyone. And no....... I have never even considered needing or wanting it in my coach.

You are likely driving well beyond the abilities you think you have.
Are you really in that much of a hurry to, at best, save several minutes while risking the lives of those that are in your vehicle let alone others that are unfortunately on the road at the same time you are? Do you really think you can react in time to avoid an accident while driving faster then posted limits? There are reasons for setting speed limits even if you do not agree with them.
Save someone the misery of your irresponsible actions. Slow down and enjoy the ride. - riven1950ExplorerThey work. I have two. Very helpful in areas where speed limit is say 45 and traffic stream is going 55-60. Great place for a speed trap and RD! Places like this all over the country.
They work if you know how they work and use them correctly...read the manual. - wa8yxmExplorer IIIThe interesting thing is that though courts have ruled state laws against Radar Detectors unconstitional there is a Federal law that could be applied.
This law says that it is 100% legal to LISTEN to a radio transmission (Radar is radio) but... You can not use what you hear for anything other than personal amusement in most cases.. You can not record it, take any action (other than laughing) based on it, you can not tell others about it and so on.
This applies to "point to point" transmissions such as between a Police Officer and his dispatcher, two cell phone users or a radar gun and itself after bouncing off your car.
But as I said, I have never heard of anyone useing it against a speeder who slows down (Thus violating it) when he picks up radar.
What I have heard of.. I patrol car with a blown engine, a always on radar gun hanging on the window and officer balloon in side (Officer Baloon is a blow up dummy (Balloon) don't you know). - Bill_SatelliteExplorer IIWhy do you need a device to help you break the law? I never have understood the concept. If the speed limit is 70 and you are doing 90 until your "radar detector" indicates trouble ahead, aren't you still breaking the law only with the hope you won't get caught? Yes, we all do this from time to time but do I want to chance the future cost of insurance on one of these devices? Maybe you do, but I don't.
- JagtechExplorerRadar detectors certainly have their place. They will usually notify you when you have been hit with radar; but they are also a safety item in that they will slow you down in places such as school zones if there is radar in use. I haven't found one yet that is immune to falsing, which can be annoying. I would never depend on it to protect me from a ticket if I was intentionally speeeding, as many police use instant-on radar.
- Horizon170ExplorerI have one detector in my pickup and I hardly ever speed over 3-4 MPH.
I used it when towing my 5th wheel. The detector will sometimes alert me to an emergency vehicle or a road work crew. It still comes in handy even though I don't use it to alert to radar.
I wouldn't buy one now. BTW don't get caught with one in VA.
