First, I recommend the Winegard SENSAR PRO, not anything from RS.
IF you have a wall plate with 12 volt outlet, Antenna connection, LED and Switch, the Sensar pro simply replaces this, no wiring changes needed.
IF you have the box of many buttons, as I do, YOu should not put ANYTHING between it and the antenna.... EXCEPT for the sensar pro..
Antenna--Sensar Pro---box of many buttons---Televisions, DVR's. and so on.
The Sensar pro includes:
A switch (Cable or other RF-source v/s Antenna
A Variable gain amplifier (Sometimes, too much gain is a bad thing, Example, Southfield MI you do not want much gain) (Most of the Detroit transmission towers are in, or just outside of, Southfield).
A scanner, finds the digital signals and "locks" on the strongest one.
A signal strength meter
Plus a bunch (well 3 buttons) of controls to make it more useful.
And a signal controlled audio device so you can adjust by ear if you can't see the display.
Very nice.
