We are finally getting a chance to take longer trips and went down to Spirit Lake/ Ocoboji, Iowa area.
While camped on Spirit Lake we picked up 33 channels on the first scan covering most of the channels from home in the Mpls./St. Paul metro. Since it was 180 miles away, and daytime, it did not seem possible. Scanning other directions picked up Sioux Falls, SD; Sioux City, IA; and other towns in Minnesota.
I suspected low power transmitters from closer towns sending out broadcasts from the Twin Cities. I finally located a good internet site listing all digit channels + sub-channels with excellent information on range, location, etc., for each signal transmitted.

Corrected link 6/10/14. Sorry for error. The site is a compiled list by Mike Kohl at Global Communications in Plain, Wisconsin. The site information is current and very helpful.
These low power transmitters allow for towns to get channels from larger cities (for a fee) and have a range of around 27 miles (can vary from around 13 miles to about 40 miles dependent on license). With my second adjustable amplifier allowing for up to 20 dBs I can double the range for getting these signals. The above site can make it easier locate these (translator) transmitters.
