Most new smart phones have a GPS on them.
With GPS enabled comes a price... Significantly reduced battery life.
Next to the display, GPS will rank high in battery consumption. Fortunately, Android is attempting to address this issue in version 4.4 (KitKat) - reducing power consumption. We shall see how this plays out.
The real problem with phones and tablets is: How to keep the device charged? The obvious answer is to plug it in. Until recently, this meant (for vehicle systems) plug in the 12 volt charger to device input port. Now, this could be a barrel connector of various sizes, a mini USB of various proprietary sizes or (on new phones and tablets) remote charging.
With new devices ( Nexus 5 (phone), Nexus 7 (tablet) ), place the device near the power source and it will charge without being directly (hard wired) connected. I have been waiting for this for two years since many apps (mine included) require a full time GPS signal... without loss due to battery dead. Hopefully, the cradle mfg's will build this in to their products.
Imagine, setting your device on the dash (and removing it from time to time), using it for weeks without ever having to plug it in.
Now that's mobile...
