Hi Bob, The DOD LS460W shines in the nighttime mode. I can see the license plates you mention with utmost clarity. Now that being said this is after you transfer the video to you computer. (BTW Free download software and it comes with the camera.) The only thing I found as a handicap is the battery time, It only last about 10 or 15 minutes when not plugged into a 12v source. But I always use it in my truck so no problem. If you need it to take a quick vid or a couple of still photos it would work on the batteries OK. As far as the functionality, It's easy once you read all the documentation and familiarize yourself with all the controls. Have you visited the DOD web site?
