Recommend a route planner

We are new to fifth wheeling and have only made a few trips and gotten stuck once in WV when the exit was closed and there was no detour. We ended up in a small town, pulling our 40' Montana thru tiny streets and made a turn to cross a bridge to get back to the main hwy, when right in front of us was this old trestle bridge with only 8' clearance.
Neither our truck GPS nor the Google maps on our phone picked any of this up, or showed an alternative way out of this mess. We were wondering if anyone out there has a recommendation for a good mapping system that will show bridges, etc. Thank you for any help in this regard.

  • I use the CoPilot iphone app. It has an RV setting. It will find an alternate route if you are forced to take a different exit. Rather than taking an exit I'm not familiar with I would continue on and find a truck stop or rest area to find an alternate route. Especially in WV. I feel your pain. We we first started traveling we didn't have a GPS and I booked us in a campground on top of a mountain! Love WV though!!
  • Google maps is not going to help with coming to a height clearance problem. Your truck GPS should have if you set the truck profile for the height of your RV. A true truckers GPS will do the same as an RV specific GPS. How long since you updated the maps on the truck GPS? And then, of course, there are just some height clearance problems that even the RV/Truck GPS units don't know about. An old trestle underpass may not show up at all no matter what GPS if it is not on a main route.
  • Do a search for an RV GPS. You can put in your height, length and possibly weight. It is then supposed to direct you accordingly.
