Not only updates, but if you have ever used a peer to peer. It runs in the background to provide data to other users.

Not only does MS have to update, but so does many others. Adobe has 3, java has 2 or 3, AVG updates every 30 minutes, and any program you have running will constantly seek updates. That's how they track your movements and choices. I turn everything off and update only if the software freezes or requires an update. Good luck
