Task Manager is a good place to start. It will identify what is running and which services are taking the most resources.
I doubt if adding memory will help much if your system speed has changed and you arent adding applications.
Depending on which Operating System you have (Windows XP, Vista, Win7, Win8, etc) with Vista or later you may have a "restore" capability to go back to factory stock or restore to an earlier date when you felt the PC was performing correctly.
You wont need your system disk if it is not corrupt. Answer the questions and we will continue to try to help.
