REV: using recovery USB drive & sys image backup

when new, i followed toshiba instructions and created a win 8 USB recovery stick. i gather it is needed to boot an image?

if or when i do a win 10 upgrade and something fouls up, or if i get some serious crash before that, i would like to have solid way to boot up and bring PC up close to how it was (win 8.1 and all its updates from MS, mozilla, etc.)

i've watched vids, browsed win 8.1 menus, been reading win 10 threads on this forum. but i am kinda lost with terms and procedures for like how to clone, recovery media, bootable system image ...

i think i am interested in

1. copying to a new 128 gb SSD from my 500 gb spinner, OR

2. creating an image of my HDD on a USB, where as i think i get it, i must also use the recovery usb media mentioned at beginning.

any help cutting thru the fog would be appreciated.

  • martha's dell came w/ W8 and we updated to W8.1. months later, original HDD failed and we managed to get computer going again w/ DELL recovery disk media and a new HDD. then had to go thru W8 to W8.1 long update process all over again.

yesterday i used control panel and remade her USB recovery drive. it is only 512 MB. i learned to use control panel to create a windows system image backup. we had it go onto her external HDD and it is around 37 GB

if her internal HDD were to fail, would the two recovery items above be able to copy the system image (updated W8.1 et al) to a new HDD?
