The first is good if you can actually SEE the TV station towers from where you are parked but for long range Well the beam width is 360 Degrees
Now think about your field of vision and how far away you can see things.. Full vision goes to around 100 degrees and motion detection to as much as 180 or more (Weak signal) for your eyes.
But let's say there is some "Dot" on the horizion you want to take a closer look at.. you grab your opera glasses.
Now you have about a 40 degree wide field of vision but it's 3 times "Closer" than it was seconds ago, You can see more clearly,, But that dot is still too far off (Jack Antenna by the way)
So you grab a good set of FIELD glasses... (Sensar IV) now you can see the dot clearly, but .. Your field of vision is only about 10 degrees.
Of course you can get some commercial tower mount antennas with like 1 Degree of beam width.. Think Telescope.
