Okay, just an update. I bought the Arris SB6141 modem and installed it so I could do away with the $8/month lease fee from TWC. The cost was less than $60 so payback happens pretty quickly.
A completely trouble free installation. I stopped by the TWC office and got the "connection kit" which consisted of a splitter and 2 short pieces of cable. I connected the incoming TWC cable to the incoming port on the splitter, then one cable from the splitter to the old TWC modem and one cable to the new Arris modem. I connected the ethernet cable from the new Arris router to my wireless router. Then called TWC and gave them the lowdown including the MAC address for the new Arris modem. The changeover was done in about 3 minutes and everything is up and running. No rebooting needed for anything. Mission accomplished.
Just in case anyone is interested. My advice to Charlie D is to just do it, it simply is easy as pie.
