I have Time Warner internet/cable and phone. I am ready to save the $8.00/month fee for their modem and buy my own. I have the Arris TG862GB2. They list suggested replacements and their description says WIFI Modem only/Internet modem only. Have done some research but what about the cable? Any suggestions so that I buy the correct item so I have all services?

My recommendation is to go with a separate modem (connects to the cable and converts it to an Ethernet signal) and a separate router (takes that Ethernet signal, provides routing, WiFi, and other services). Most likely they are DOCSIS 3 on your cable, so a DOCSIS 3 cable modem would work. ARRIS SB6183 or SB6141 would be a good choice. You can call them to verify those work.Then you can pick a router. I like the Asus routers myself. Reliable and versatile. They have reasonable firewall services, and some other good security features. Most of them also support USB tethering to any Android phone or MiFi-type device so you can use wireless broadband as well as cable hookups. Here's what ours is like mounted behind the main TV in our trailer. I have an SB6141 for cable internet, and an ADSL2+ modem if we have DSL service. I have a U301 from vzwmifi.com plugged into the router at this time. If you have phone from them too, you'll want to ask what VoIP adapter they recommend. They should be able to give you the info to configure it.

Basically almost any router will work. We have the Buffalo Air Station and it works well.However since you also have phone through them you are really limited with any modem choices. I'm assuming you're talking landline and not VoIP of course.

Not really sure what you mean by "What about the cable?"The cable splits somewhere - one side goes to your TV (cable box probably) and the other side goes to your internet modem. Whether your modem provides wifi or not has nothing to do with cable TV.I turn off the wifi on my modem and move my wifi router from the house to the RV when I'm travelling. That way, all my devices connect to exactly the same router wherever we are.

I know I need Dos3. The cable comes as a single wire into the house, splits into the cable wiring in each room. That tells me that the land line coming in handles cable, wifi and land line.The current Modem plugs into the house cable wiring. I do have a land line. The wall mounted plug for the phone also ties into the back of the Modem. Time Warner has a list of approved Modems and I assume that would mean that they would work on their system. Some of the Modems on that list say "WiFi Modem" and some say "Internet Modem only". That makes we wonder if it would be what I call "all in one". As I said, I can not tell if the recommended ones are what I need for all three service but again, the description say "internet" or "wifi. I have looked at pictures of the back of 3 of the recommendations and none of them have a phone jack port but the one I have from Time Warner does.

Modem is other side of house in office.
