Phone apps will work just fine when GPS data is unavailable. You can either download the map before you go or just wait it out. The phone downloads more of the route than you see on the screen so you would have to be out of network for an extended period of time to lose tracking. If you are traveling any highway in the US you will pick a signal up again pretty quickly. Even traveling from Phoenix to Las Vegas on US60 where there is no Verizon service the maps keep going. I have used the Garmin products since the early 2000's and can attest that they are great products. They are just outdated in the capabilities compared to the phone mapping products due to the limited storage and always out of date mapping information.
I have waze and google maps on my phone.
I prefer the stand alone gps.
When using Waze or G. Maps, are these apps eating up data?
They do use a small bit of data but not a lot. As I mentioned earlier, if you don't want to use up the data you can download the maps from the area you will be traveling and use the app completely off-line. The only thing missing is the live traffic data. WAZE does requires an internet connection but again uses very little.
With Stand Alone GPS street information being, at a minimum, 3 months behind and usually a year or more I find the real time apps much more useful. Even if you like a GPS in your RV, Google Maps and WAZE have 1000's more POI's, and directions to them, than any stand-alone GPS will ever have and will provide you point to point info while in your toad.
