Go back to a flip phone? I've never left. :)
I have a cell phone to call someone if necessary, which has happened a couple of times over the years. It cost me about $12 last year. My kids and grand kids have spent several thousand dollars among them last year so they, basically, can access social media. Go figure.
I get the cost argument. Sure a flip phone and cheap pnd cost less but also provide far less function and more devices to manage. I use a smart phone for everything I could use a computer for(I don't use social media or create spreadsheets) and would never be without one. It is access to the entire internet in your pocket. For gps I can name 3 apps off the top of my head that do NOT require a cell signal or data from that signal to navigate- Garmin North America, Here maps and Co pilot. All have fully self contained and lifetime maps. All function as well or better than a pnd using smart phones built in gps chip (mine has 1 meter accuracy). When you consider a modern smart phone does 4k video and 12mp optical zoom still camera, skype, gps, internet browse, email, texting, streaming video, bluetooth audio- and does all of this on high res 5.5 inch screens it really is a get what you pay for scenario. Older tech may be cheaper but better? I don't think so.
