It sounds like a loose connection somewhere. A short would be blowing fuses. I'd pull the radio out and check all the wires and connections behind it.
IF you need a new one, I had the same problem trying to find a radio to control my changer. I found numerous ones for sale on ebay; used of course. I got a nice Sony with changer control, blue tooth, and a USB input used for $40. So, don't give up on the changer.
