The fact that it used to work with the internal wiring, but doesn't now. And that it does work when wired direct, pretty much indicates something is now wrong with the internal wiring. A loose or bad connection somewhere probably. Even a loose/marginal wiring connection can check ok looking only for continuity or for voltage with no load.
