I think there is a little confusion here.
You can get phone service through Walmart in 2 basic ways.
1. They have Straight Talk. You can buy a phone through ST and then buy an ST phone plan and pay by the mopnth. The most popular is their 'unlimited' plan for $45/month. ST does not own their own cell towers or infrastructure to support these plans. They buy excess capacity from Verizon and at least one other company (Sprint or AT&T I think). You do not get to pick which one your phone uses. I specifically wanted to be on the Verizon network so I bought an Iphone 5 because it uses the Verizon network under ST. The network used depends on the phone you select. And 'no', Walmart will not tell you. You will need to do a little research on the internet.
ST is not strictly a GSM network. They have both CDMA and GSM phones and 2 service providers, depending on the phone you buy.
Under ST you buy and own the phone and can stop service at any time with no fees. You just renew the Unlimited plan every month.
2. Walmart also sells phones and plans for Verizon and a few others I think. Just like Costco or Best Buy. This IS NOT part of ST. I am not knowledgeable about this because I didn't have any intention of going down this path.
